Stalker of actress Jennifer Garner Arrested

SMDP arrested one Steven Burky around 9 a.m. last Monday, December 14, for allegedly stalking Jennifer Garner and her daughter, Violet Affleck. Burky already had a restraining order against him in 2008; according to the law, Burky, is not allowed to be 100 yards or closer to the Garner and her family. Burky was arrested near the First Presbyterian Church of Santa Monica.

Team Santa Monica Swimmer Wins Twice at Winter Age Group Championships

Santa Monica High School freshman Andy Lau, 14, won two gold medals representing Team Santa Monica (TSM) this past weekend at the 2009 Southern California Swimming Winter Age Group Championships at the Desert Breeze Aquatic Center in Las Vegas. Lau started off the three-day competition winning the 400-yard individual medley with a time of 4:17.63. He later added the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 54.54. The 13-14 boys’ 800-yard freestyle relay team featuring Lau and Santa Monica HS freshman, Adrian Tang, Scott Simmer, and Steven Turnbull was also victorious on the opening night of the meet.

Payton Perrotta, 13, of El Segundo, contributed top three finishers in the 200-yard backstroke (2nd), 500-yard freestyle (2nd), 200-yard freestyle (3rd). The efforts of Lau, Perrotta and the rest of the 41-swimmer TSM contingent placed the team third in the women’s division, seventh in the men’s, and fourth overall in the combined results.

Lau and Perrotta qualified to compete at the 2009 CA/NV Sectional Meet which will start on Friday in Long Beach. Fifteen other TSM qualifiers will compete, as well. The meet will feature teams from as far north as Sacramento and as far south as San Diego.

David Finkel, Andrew Walzer Elected Officers of SMC Board

David B. Finkel, Judge of the Superior Court (Ret.) has been elected chair and Dr. Andrew Walzer vice chair of the Santa Monica Community College District Board of Trustees for 2010.

This is the first time that these trustees, both elected in 2006, have been selected for these leadership posts, which rotate annually. Finkel succeeds Louise Jaffe as chair and Walzer succeeds Finkel as vice chair.

Andrew Walzer, a resident of Santa Monica for seven years, was elected to the Board of Trustees in November 2006.
