Laugh to Support Local School: Comedy Night Tomorrow to Benefit McKinley Elementary School

Two legends of stand-up comedy make a rare southern California appearance in Santa Monica this coming Tuesday night, so get your tickets while you can.

Paula Poundstone, known for her penchant for wearing men’s ties and suspenders, and comedic storyteller Bobby Collins, take the stage at Shutters on the Beach to benefit McKinley Elementary School.

The two comics have teamed up for this show at Shutters for the past ten years to benefit the school’s visual and performing arts programs. The show is called “Live it Up. Laugh it Up: Comedy Night and Live Auction.”

Poundstone typically appears on stage with only a stool, a microphone, and her beloved can of Diet Pepsi to get her through. The Boston Globe said, “Poundstone improvises with a crowd like a jazz musician… swinging in unexpected directions without a plan, without a net.” Her brand of sharp wit has graced stages, television shows, radio programs, and films, and she’s sure to leave the audience wanting more after Tuesday’s benefit show. There is no telling what will come out of Poundstone’s mouth at any given moment, so the show should be full of surprises.

Collins comes with a more natural, relaxed style that compliments Poundstone’s candid brand of comedy. “Bobby Collins elicits a mixture of heavy applause and genuine laughter even before he gets to the microphone,” wrote Variety of his performances. Like Poundstone, his act has graced stage, screen, and radio.

The event raised more than $7,000 last year and the school hopes this year’s event will surpass that number and help McKinley’s arts programs.

The show on March 29 at Shutters – located at 1 Pico Boulevard – will also a feature an auction where several “Date Night” packages, including packages from Santa Monica Pier, Rustic Canyon, the Fairmont Miramar, and a weekend at the Ritz Carlton Hotel in Laguna Nigel, will be up for grabs. After the stand up, the audience will be able to join Poundstone and Collins for dessert and coffee and live music from Santa Monica’s own McBand.

The two comics are usually busy traveling around the country, performing and bringing their humor to various cities from coast to coast. Take advantage of this one-night-only chance to see them in L.A.

Standup comedy fans should not miss this show!
