Cinema on the Street, Downtown Santa Monica’s free film series, kicks off this tonight, July 11 with a screening of the 1989 classic “Field of Dreams” at 8:30 pm.
The film was selected as it was released the same year the Third Street Promenade was reimagined into one of the most successful public spaces in the world.
Roughly 200 people are expected to attend the screening, to take place just south of Wilshire Boulevard on the Promenade.
PureBarre Santa Monica and the Santa Monica Little League will be on hand giving away freebies to those who arrive early at 7 pm. Downtown Santa Monica, Inc. will also be handing out cool swag.
KCRW’s film critic Matt Holzman will introduce the film and give a brief presentation on Santa Monica in film.
The six-week free film series will also feature “The Wizard of Oz” on July 18, “Airplane!” on July 25, “Apollo 13” on Aug. 1, “How to Train Your Dragon” on Aug. 8, and “Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade” on Aug. 15.
This summer’s movies were selected online by popular vote for the first time since Cinema on the Street’s debut in 2011.
