Leadership, creativity, ambition…Santa Monica New Roads High School senior Amanda Gorman has it all. Not only is she the first ever Youth Poet Laureate of Los Angeles, but Gorman is a 2015 fellow of the ANNpower Vital Voices Initiative, a selective organization focused on developing leadership skills in young women worldwide.
The Santa Monica Chamber of Commerce will celebrate its 91st Annual Installation Dinner on Sunday June 15 at the Fairmont Miramar Hotel and Bungalows.This yearly event, which consists of 500 business stakeholders, community and civic leaders, will kick off with a reception under the historic Fig Tree in the hotel’s front walk, just as it has in previous years. Guests will have the opportunity to enjoy the event and bid on select items from local businesses at the Silent Auction as well as purchase a chance to win exceptional raffle prizes, the Chamber explained.

Pacific Park on Santa Monica Pier has begun illuminating one of its Ferris wheel’s 20 gondolas each day since May 6 to spotlight a park milestone, starting with 1996, in honor of its 20th birthday celebration at the end of the month.
A total of 10 bicycle racks stand on the north side of Metro’s new Expo Line Downtown Santa Monica station. A further 10 racks have been installed by the City of Santa Monica on the south side. With Metro’s Expo Line opening to Santa Monica today, that means a total 40 cyclists will be able to lock their bikes to a rack, safe and sound at the station before heading east.
Post Mortem Movement Theater Company will start production on a newly devised work set in the Marion Davies Guest House Garden, to debut July 13-15 & 20-22. The company will also be offering two movement workshops in June as part of the Beach=Culture series. Other Beach=Culture events this summer include readings, talks and concerts.
